View Full Version : Remembrance - Unashamedly without Apology.

The soldier stood and faced God
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

Sunset Vigil(Afghanistan)

The news is spread far and wide
Another comrade has sadly died
A sunset vigil upon the sand
As a soldier leaves this foreign land

We stand alone, and yet as one
In the fading light of a setting sun
We’ve all gathered to say goodbye
To our fallen comrade who’s set to fly

The eulogy’s read about their life
Sometimes with words from pals or wife
We all know when the CO’s done
What kind of soldier they’d become

The padre then calls us all to pray
The bugler has Last Post to play
The cannon roars and belches flame
We will recall, with pride, their name

A minute’s silence stood in place
As tears roll down the hardest face
deafening silence fills the air
With each of us in personal prayer

Reveille sounds and the parade is done
The hero remembered, forgotten by none
They leave to start the journey back
In a coffin draped in the Union Jack

Sgt Andy McFarlane, 2009.

100 years ago today Britain declared war on Germany so tonight at 10 pm I will turn off all lights for an hour and have just 1 candle burning along with a lot of people worldwide in remembrance of those from both sides who paid the ultimate price !

I hope many of you will join in with this small act of remembrance as a thank you to all those who have sacrificed so much that we may live as we choose

Not only is it an act of remembrance it is a sign of RESPECT and thanks to all those heroes who gave so much for our country.

Will certainly turn all the lights out in remembrance, its the very least all those who died deserve..

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them R.I.P

The War Sonnets: V. The Soldier
If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

I don't know what it is but there is something in this track that brings back memories and feelings that I had thought were long buried and forgotten

Take note all and remember to show respect as the song says "it's a pittance of time"

This morning I went to Parsonage Farm in High Easter, the lure (sic) of a bit of drop-shotting for the big Perch was to much to ignore... whilst I was unlocking the gate to the fishery I heard the familiar and spine tingling sound of a Merlin Engine and hunting the sky I saw a Spitfire flying low above High Easter Church... It circled in a 90 degree bank and climbed out with a victory roll.... for some reason I couldn't see clearly to read the combination on the lock for a few minutes...

Last we forget

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
